I am on the editorial board of the Washington Times. We are conservative and very strong on the Constitution, including the Second Amendment. Except for the Wall Street Journal, most other daily newspapers’ editorial boards are liberal and oppose gun rights.

The New York Times takes the most extreme anti-gun position. Its editorial board has called for requiring a “new and stronger ban on assault weapons,”11 record-keeping for ammunition sales,12 and the “outlawing of magazines of more than 10 bullets.”13 The paper doesn’t even pretend that the “background check on every gun sale”14 it has called for is anything other than the government knowing exactly what firearms every citizen owns: “Requiring background checks at gun shows, parking-lot sales and websites would reduce the cash-and-carry anonymity of millions of gun transactions, putting buyers on notice that their sale is being recorded and can be traced.”15

The Old Gray Lady is so over the top in its anti-gun views, you have to wonder if anyone on its elitist editorial board lives without an armed guard at work and a doorman at home. This was the editorial after Obama and Reid failed to get sixty votes to pass Manchin-Toomey: “For 45 senators, the carnage at Sandy Hook Elementary School is a forgotten tragedy. The toll of 270 Americans who are shot every day is not a problem requiring action. The easy access to guns on the Internet, and the inevitability of the next massacre, is not worth preventing.”16 The online version of the editorial links the “270” to a Brady Campaign fact sheet.17

The New York Times wants Congress to pass a federal law to force states to make it more difficult to get concealed-carry permits and “prohibit guns from public places like parks, schools and churches.” Of course the Times strongly opposed commonsense national concealed-carry reciprocity, saying it would “turn a porous system into a sieve.”18

And this is how the New York Times editorial board described citizens who are pro-Second Amendment: “The gun lobby is a combination of forces that includes manufacturers, hunters and hobbyists, political opportunists, and a fanatically active faction that believes guns are needed to fight off the conquest of freedom by the government.”19 The newspaper has even started a daily blog called “Gun Report” by Joe Nocera that lists every death by firearm, even accidental ones.20

If you only follow liberal media and listen to President Obama, it would be easy to believe that gun owners are all bitter clingers, reckless hicks, or criminals. The truth is that the 100 million gun owners in America are among the most responsible, patriotic, family-oriented citizens in our nation. And they use guns millions of times a year to avert crimes.

That’s why I asked law-abiding gun owners to send photographs of themselves to be included in this book. We were inundated with hundreds of photos that show Americans—men and women, young and old—exercising their Second Amendment rights.

Along with the photos, many people have written notes explaining why they chose to get firearms and how they use them.
